Revitalization of Site Masterplan at the Ritz Carlton Doha

Although the proposed project provides for a rational system in an infrastructural context, which could be defined as functions built over a main backbone, it rejects, in terms of its main approach decision, the uniform/ monot- onous approach in designing new spaces of such large surface area, aiming at creating a (kind of) ‘patchwork’ language as if it were de- signed by different architects at different times. In this context, it suggests to use a 500-me- ter-long Boulevard which starts from the new site of the area (Island A) for connecting the main focal points which are the Transportation Hub, the Ritz Carlton Hotel, the Expo and the Marina, bringing those functions together on a single backbone, and proposes to introduce an alteration to the already-existing road and the Hotel Parking Lot (which could be expected to be easily merged with the Transportation Hub required in Island C area). With this backbone serving as a linear axis connecting all main fo- cal points and functions, it is proposed to con- vert the single road providing vehicle access to the site into a Boulevard in order to create a system that is used by both vehicles and pedestrians taking into account the climactic conditions of the area, the everyday life of the people and the dynamism the Boulevard would people and the dynamism the Boulevard would introduce because of vehicle access and pe- destrian use. Especially in Island A area where Residences to be nourished by the Ritz Carl- ton Hotel are to be, it is planned to increase pedestrian use by introducing restrictions at certain hours during the day in consideration of the night-day use of the Boulevard as well. The proposed Boulevard is foreseen to go beyond serving the Residences nourished by the Ho- tel and evolve into an attraction for people liv- ing in the city. The main layout decisions sug- gest that the aforementioned Boulevard does indeed divide the Island containing the Hotel into two, but this has been regarded as an op- portunity for making use of the structural and botanical landscaping which contains functions of two different characters. It was decided to turn the area where the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Is- land A and Island B intersect into a park as well by greening the roof of the Transportation Hub especially where the Transportation Hub and the entrance of the Hotel’s Convention Center intersect..
